Buried Classic Film Treasure has surfaced again with "Of Mice and Men". KDLS has 2 copies and 1 copy is with a patron. I originally requested the KCLS to purchase the original "Of Mice and Men". I had seen other newer versions of the book, but still feel the original was the best. The movie stars 3 unlikely actors and actress who all put in some of the finest acting in the history of films. I don't want to give any of the plot away, though I know many of you are familiar with the book. Yet I found myself spellbound by the movie. "Of Mice and Men" from 1939 is one of the Top 20 Classic Films of All Time in my book. I can't imagine why there is only one review on the web site. Please leave your own comments here if you see the film. I would really appreciate it.

The title comes from a poem by Robert Burns – “the best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men…. Lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain.” Well our two protagonists dream about a better life while working on a ranch. Previously others had dreams also and never got anywhere. Others also have dreams of a better life, sometimes the dream is just to be able to communicate with other human beings. Loneliness – you can be living with other people, but maybe nobody you talk to listens. There is one great scene where Lenny, the slow-witted protagonist, tells his dream of his future to the only woman in the film. She’s also telling her dream of her future to Lenny, but guess what? Neither is listening to the other. They might as well be in separate tunnels as in Ernesto Sabato's novel El Tunel. One of the lonely persons is the only African-American on the ranch – he is lonely, as he is segregated and he is Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man. The African-American actor is Leigh Whipper and his character is rather unique in Hollywood 1939 – he is a fully three-dimensional African-American – Wow! How did this slip into a Hollywood film made for white people in 1939?
