Very good true life gangster/crime drama. Familiar storyline, but well acted and excels as a period piece. Gritty and at times violent. Moves at a fairly slow pace overall, but never seemed overlong or boring. This film does have a LONG runtime, so keep that in mind before you watch it.

This is a good movie based on a criminal kingpin Frank Lucas who took over the east coast heroin market in the 1970s. The movie is well written, acted and filmed using a big budget. It is an entertaining popcorn movie that has an interesting story to tell. If you liked "Donnie Brasco" or "Good Fellas" you will probably enjoy this movie.

A very well made on all accounts about the story of frank lucas and his rise to power as a drug lord and the dedicated cop Richie roberts who lost almost everything just to bring him down.

The films contains some very good action moments....a decent story line and some strong characters but the film suffers from dull performances from the two leads whom we have seen better in other films and a story line that has be seen in so many other movies of the opast thirty years.

Good effort but i expected much better especially from russell crowe, denzel washington and its director ridley scott

American Gangster (2007) 176 min. starring Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington in this true story of Frank Lucas, the first African American crime boss to give the Italian mafia a run for their money. The film takes a while to set the plot in motion introducing and developing the many characters - it actually meanders a little in the first hour, which is the reason for 3 stars (good) instead of 3.5 (must see). But once it gets going, there is something special here. Both Crowe and Denzel are a delight to watch as usual. I particularily loved the scene when they actually meet - two superstar actors sizing each other up with a smile - pure genius on the director's part (Ridley Scott). This picture garnered two Oscar nominations in 2008 - one for Supporting Actress (Rudy Dee) and another for Art Direction.

Director Ridley Scott spins this yarn concerning a Harlem drug kingpin who smuggles heroin into the country by hiding it in the bodies of U.S. soldiers killed during battle in Vietnam. There was a time when no one noticed reserved driver Frank Lucas, but when the criminal kingpin he was charged with transporting through the city streets suddenly dies, Lucas seizes the opportunity to build his own criminal empire. In the following months, Lucas solidifies his status as Harlem's most innovative drug dealer by delivering a product that is purer than the competitors' and cheaper, as well. When innovative businessman Lukas attempts to go semi-legit by becoming one of the Manhattan borough's biggest civil supporters, however, street-savvy outcast cop Ritchie Roberts begins to sense a sizable shift in the hierarchy of the drug underworld. But Roberts is one of the few honest detectives operating within a corrupt system, and as he sets out to investigate the case, crooked detective Trupo does everything in his power to compromise the integrity of his idealistic counterpart. Upon clearing all of the usual Mafia-connected suspects, Roberts begins to believe that a previously unknown black power player has come out of the woodwork to dominate the local drug trade. While Roberts and Lucas may be operating on opposite sides of the law, the one thing that both men have in common is a strict code of ethics that separates them from their opportunistic colleagues. Now, as a confrontation between the two men becomes inevitable and the fate of each becomes inexorably tied to the other, it gradually becomes apparent that only one of them will emerge from the conflict victorious.
