Pretty fun and entertaining. I am a fan of John C. Reilly but did not know about his musical talents. Finding out something new about one of your faves is always interesting, so on that facet alone I recommend.
Like some others have cited it is basically a spoof of several of early rock's (i.e. "Rock-and-Roll") icons. The number of children Dewey Cox procreated is somewhere along the order of 39!
Lots of great supporting talent too! If you are a fan of "The Office", Jenna Fischer (a.k.a. Pam Halpert neé Beesly) plays his true love interest. See the bonus material for additional music videos.

This had potential from the previews, but was totally overdone. I only got through about 30 minutes before I decided it was a waste of time.

I expected this one to be horrible, but it was slightly better than I expected...only slightly though. My husband liked it though. Kudos to John C. Reilly for his talent in singing and playing the guitar.

The one thing that sets this film apart from other similar comedies is the music, and this is where John C. Reilly shines. Every song is stupid, but they are still great songs. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again, but it is definitely worth checking out. I would recommend this to fans of Judd Apatow, as well as to fans of off beat comedies.

This is the story of Dewey Cox, singer, songwriter, legend in this Johnny Cash-esque mock-umentary. This spans Dewey’s life from first talent show to Hall of Fame induction, from his first child to his to 22, from his first hit of weed to Viagra. This is a heartwarming story of striving against the odds and how to properly use a machete. Dewey is played by John C. Reilly who does his own singing and is marvelous. The music impersonates Johnny Cash, Elvis, Bob Dylan, The Beatles and more. With such hits as “Lets Duet” and “Let me hold you (little man)” you won’t stop laughing until the film ends. The soundtrack is also available so you can take a little Dewey with you when you hit the road. Staff picks 2008

You got to want to stick around and see a movie with the tagline: Life made him tough. Love made him strong. Music made him hard - with such a double-entendre parting word! And Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007) is a pretty hard-core spoof of Walk the Line, which everyone knows was a rendition of The Johnny Cash Story.

As satire of the biopic genre, this movie works overtime. Like Johnny Cash, Singer Dewey overcomes adversity to become a musical legend. Yeah, we get that! But what really makes this flick sick - for today's generation - is the work of writer/director/producer Judd Apatow ( The 40 Year Old Virgin; Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby; Knocked Up; Superbad; Forgetting Sarah Marshall; Drillbit Taylor; Stepbrothers; and the soon-to-be-released, Pineapple Express).
This is a guy of no small importance in Hollywood genre comedies these days. When Apatow hooks up with either John C. Reilly solo in this movie, or combines him with Will Ferrell in so many of the other aforementioned hits - or lets Canadian Seth Rogen loose on an unsuspecting audience - get set for zany, screwball laughs that come from those locked-away places in all of us where we hide our disdain-cum-pleasure for sick jokes and disgusting sight-gags. Apatow knows how to hit that nerve - and he does it over and over again until we finally submit to the crass euphoria of it all.

Apatow's writing is what gives this movie the spark it needs, because director Jake Kasdan frankly flounders in his control of the movie's pace. It's really too long, and some tighter rein over Reilly's acting would have made it more effective.

Overall, however, it comes close to brilliance but doesn't hit the mark enough times for me to give it more than 3 stars on the OPL rating scale.

As a spoof on other "lives of" this sometimes works and is funny, other times it misses the mark. Definitely quirky and if you get the joke, worth a watch

Skip It. This is a silly comedy with no laughs. The biggest problem with the picture is that there's little empathy for the main character. The best scene in the film is the homage to the Beatles where Jack Black plays Paul McCartney. Other than that, find another movie to borrow.
