Nearly 50 years old and it still retains its power. Eastwood gives possibly the best of his enigmatic western anti-hero performances here. (The exception may be his damaged "Unforgiven" gunfighter a quarter century or so later; in fact the two films bookend Eastwood's amazing cowboy career).
Clint Eastwood, as surely everyone knows by now, is the determined and resourceful "Good" of the title; he is partnered memorably by the "Bad," veteran actor Lee Van Cleef, playing an implacable gunman who watches, plots, and observes everything with a kind of dark amusement right up to the end, and the "Ugly," the great character actor Eli Wallach, here a more desperate and panicked version of the desperado leader he played in "The Magnificent Seven" six or seven years earlier.
The extraordinary close-ups, violent action, and stunning long shot vistas revolutionized the American western film (reportedly much to the dismay of fellow icon John Wayne, who once wrote Eastwood an angry letter), and as others have noted here Ennio Morricone's operatic score is as essential a part of this film as Eastwood himself.
Denigrated and dismissed by many critics upon its original release, "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" is now an acknowledged masterpiece and art house classic. To get the full effect, try if you can to see this film on a big screen in a movie theater like The Music Box or at least on as wide a television screen as possible. Watch for the dizzying, thrilling camera work at the end as the half-crazed Tuco (Wallach) dashes through a cemetery at increasing speed, back and forth, back and forth as he searches desperately for a gravestone marked "Arch Stanton" while Morricone's majestic music ("The Ecstasy of Gold") towers and swells, urging him on.

@VinTek: well, actually THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY is the third movie in THE MAN WITH NO NAME trilogy, so Clint was in at least two other Westerns first. One interesting thing about the first movie, FOR A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, is that it is basically a remake of YOJIMBO, a Kurosawa film about a samurai who fights a rifle-armed villain. If you watch FISTFUL, it's style is super Japanese. This sort of got phased out by GOOD BAD UGLY, but It's cool to see a Japanese story interpreted by an Italian director, with one American actor.

Totally agree on how awesome this movie is, though. Sooo awesome. Big influence on George Lucas, Stephen King, etc. The landscape is beautiful, the guns are thunderous, the men are hard and vicious. A must-see.

THE classic spaghetti western that led the way to Clint Eastwood's career.

Perhaps one of Leone's best films.

Must See - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) 166 min. Probably THE best western ever made. This Sergio Leono masterpiece is the 3rd of 5 "spaghetti westerns" directed by Leone. The film follows A Fist Full of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965). Then followed by Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) and A Fist Full of Dynamite (1971). The chemistry between the cast including Clint Eastwood (the good), Lee Van Cleef (the bad) and Eli Wallach (the ugly) is perfect. Eli Wallach's great line "When you have to shoot - shoot, don't talk" is in this one. The score by Ennio Morricone is incredible. Borrow this one; it's a "must see".
