After a morning hunt takes a sinister turn, Quentin and his old friend Julia charter a magical sailing ship and set out on an errand to the wild outer reaches of their kingdom. Their pleasure cruise becomes an adventure when the two are unceremoniously dumped back into the last place Quentin ever wants to see: his parent's house in Chesterton, Massachusetts. And only the black, twisted magic that Julia learned on the streets can save them.

Add a CommentInteresting novel that build on the first of this series. Liked this one better than the first, actually.
Calling this "Harry Potter for adults" is accurate, but doesn't really convey how amazing this series is. With the compelling writing of Narnia or Harry Potter, Lev Grossman confronts adult themes of substance abuse, infidelity, and adult coming of age. Be sure to read the first book in this series - The Magicians - and be prepared for a cliffhanger before the third book comes out!
The book was amazing, from start to end and you really feel for Quentin at the end since it wasn't fair for him. I hope Lev Grossman makes a sequel to this book.
Some really interesting and fresh ideas. Not as "magical" as the first book, but definitely a page-turner. Felt like more plot lines should have been resolved--hopefully that means there will be more books coming in this series! Not recommended as a stand-alone book--a lot of the story relies on the reader remembering details from the first book.
Anyone who read and loved the first in the series will enjoy this one as well. Anyone who has also finished reading Harry Potter and/or Narnia should also check this one and the first as well. You won't be disppointed :o)
