This is an engrossing read full of characters from all walks of life. It introduces us to a police inspector who is decent, world weary & tired of trying to do his job properly while dealing with the political agendas of his superiors. Not an original concept but Carlyle is an appealing character. Through flashbacks, we learn how he got to where he is & his history with the people who populate his life. A 20 year old suicide is tied to present day murders & the class system in Britain is very much in evidence as he tries to solve the case & get to the people responsible. A good, solid read & hopefully, the start of a series.

A deeply cynical book by a journalist who knows how it all works in the UK and everywhere else. Taken from the front pages of the tabloids with a few too many cliches but overall an entertaining read.

This is one terrific book. I hope that the author has plans for a sequel.
