I loved this show and I thought Elizabeth Moss was very good although her accent was a bit dodgy at times. I was hoping there would be a sequel sometime.

A thoughtful mystery that unfolds slowly across 6 episodes. Set in a beautiful and rugged landscape and beautifully filmed, I was fully engaged in the journey of the main character as she seeks to unravel, understand and fill in the missing pieces of the mysteries of the town of Laketop as well as her own. Her journey is a true hero's journey that she pursues recklessly and yet it is a story of redemption and healing for by the end she comes to find the great gift of self-trust and true love.
The story is told not only in bold brushstrokes, but subtle ones as well. One of my favorite scenes is set at the home of Al Parker. When she arrives at Al's front door (truely the door to the Monster's Lair) for dinner she initially refuses to take off her coat. Why? Too bad she did not listen to herself in that moment. Good story telling, that. Brava.

Started out great, but by the third episode every single man in the show was a total creep - there was not a single good man portrayed - so I thought the balance was pretty uneven and the storyline moved away from the hunt for the little girl to the main characters life??? Watch it if you want to, but don't buy it.

Haunting, and at times frustrating, mystery. Dialogue is actually thought provoking, though some might find it a bit too "new age-ish." I found the character that Moss played to be at first sympathetic and then slightly irritating in terms of her naivete. Kept my interest to the end, but there needs to be a sequel.

This mini-series is a harrowing tale of men's violence towards women as only Jane Campion can tell it. I was mesmerized, horrified and enthralled by this film. The subject matter is dark and disturbing, in stark contrast to the breathtaking beauty of the landscape. I highly recommend it. I had to turn on the subtitles to understand the dialogue

What the.. Jane Campion!? Did she have a brain injury I didn't hear about? Interminable and disappointing. Of course N.Z. looks fabulous and otherworldly as usual. You could fast-forward and just look at the pretty scenery and get approximately the same entertainment value. Why?

Rough, unlikeable characters. Miserable storyline.

Terrible. Disappointing. No plot. A mix of foul humans poor dialogue, no emotion.

Perhaps the acting was mediocre in a couple of scenes. I watched all 6 installments, in the hope of improvement. The Best thing about Top of the Lake was --- The End.

my wife and I watched the first episode and took it back. the scenery was wonderful. the rest was not worth it for us to view the rest of the series. I was not intrigued with the characters. some of them were annoying or just bad. I did not care enough to want to see them get theirs.

Other: Strong - yet quite warped - theme of feminism is present throughout. Women attempt to assert themselves but attack each other and behave like doormats.

Sexual Content: Strong themes of incest, pedophilia, and rape. Two of which are not resolved in the plot. None are graphic or show nudity but all are disturbing nonetheless. There is nudity with some of it full frontal but blurred or done respectfully.

Violence: Warning about a scene involving a dog being senselessly shot. A tad graphic and unnecessary to the plot.
