Cary Grant was hilarious in the first half, and the bumbling Nigel Bruce was adorable as 'Beaky' with his "Old Bean"s and "Old Girl"s... Hitchcock accelerates Grant's dark side in the second part of this romantic thriller, and Joan Fontaine excels as his jittery wife, nearly 'losing it' over whether he *is* or isn't... This was her Oscar winning follow-up to the prior year's Hitchcock nugget, "Rebecca", and as the "Old Girl" just passed away at 96, I wanted to check it out. Highly recommended, although, as another has mentioned, the ending which is said not to have been to Alfred's choosing, wasn't particularly satisfying to me. Still a terrific film. FIVE STARS.

Outstanding acting especially by Cary Grant as the villain. I won't spoil the ending, but after you watch the movie you might want to research the ending Hitchcock would have preferred.

When Johnnie is warned against wooing the spinster Lina, he decides to go ahead anyway. Soon Lina is in his thrall until she discovers his secret life. From then on she is very suspicious of her husband. And the audience is left to ask "is he or isn't he a murderer?"

Johnnie Aysgarth (to Lina, as she fumbles with the top button of her blouse, flustered from his fixing her hairdo): "Don't do that." Lina McLaidlaw: "Why not?" Johnnie Aysgarth: "Because your ucipital mapilary is quite beautiful." Lina McLaidlaw: "What's an... ucipital mapilary?" Johnnie Aysgarth (gently pokes the indented spot on her throat): "That." Lina McLaidlaw: "You don't need to touch it."
